Wendy Maloney – Spring Garden Elementary School
When asked what an enrichment program would look like at Spring Garden Elementary School, many ideas come to mind. Robotics, STEM challenges, 24 club, etc. We currently have these types of enrichment programs at our school. What we are in need of is new playground equipment.
Our current playground equipment is on the decline. In the next few years the equipment will be deemed unsafe for use according to an inspector for Carroll County Public Schools. We are currently trying to raise money for a new playground. This task has not been an easy one, and we are in our second year of fundraising to try to reach the amount of money we need to build a new one.
After receiving the grant challenge announcement “Wires Down Video Challenge”, we immediately decided to submit a student video for consideration.
Enrichment is an important component to the education of our students. Enrichment should also include the health of our students. Physical activity is needed more now, then any time before. Our students constantly talk about video games and spend countless hours indoors, sitting in front of a computer, TV or cell phone. It is beneficial to their well-being to get our students outside and playing.
Our school is located in a very large neighborhood. Many children use the current playground to get outside and enhance their lives through physical activity. If we are unable to raise enough money to replace our old rundown playground, students may just sit inside and vegetate in front of their video games.
It is important that we find the money to fund this opportunity to enrich our students’ lives. The students and we hope our video entry will help our quest to fund this much needed playground equipment.
Thank you for providing this opportunity.
