Connie Charitonuk – Youth’s Benefit Elementary

Youth’s Benefit Elementary is working towards earning Green School status. Any monies won through the BGE Natural Gas competition would go towards materials to help us better serve our environment. Ideas that we would like to implement include a composting area to reduce trash output. Students in fourth grade study natural cycles and how they can use the 3R’s to be more environmentally aware. Students would also purchase a rain collection barrel which could be established in our recently built vegetable gardens. Third grade classes study weather patterns and tools to grow their understanding of how weather impacts our daily lives. These tools would enrich the learning classroom experience as it would allow a more hands-on approach to better understanding environmental sciences. Classes would be invited to go outside and participate in composting and measuring rain collection then monitor how these new tools are impacting our carbon footprint.
