Kelly Murray – Riverside Elementary School
School Enrichment Project
What does it mean to be a Patriot? This essential question will guide our enrichment project if we win grant funding!
At present, Riverside Elementary School does not have a Patriot Program. Administration, faculty, students, and community members have all expressed a desire to bring such a program to the students of Riverside. As of September 2018, Harford County has 29 elementary schools participating in a Patriot Program; we want to be #30!
Establishing a Patriot Program here at Riverside Elementary will help students learn about national and state geography; develop an understanding of their county, state, and country; and make discoveries about our local and national government, all while developing a sense of appreciation for American history. While it will be an expectation that elements of the program be completed at home, much of the chosen components- such as recitations, artifacts, illustrations, and songs- can be incorporated into daily classroom instruction. Students will be encouraged to extend their patriotism outside of school by participating in community service/outreach projects.
As a result of participating in a Patriot Program, students will be able to define and exemplify patriotism through their daily words and actions. Our goal is to build a patriotic school community, and promote a sense of pride in, and respect for, our students, our community, and our country.
